He started his studies with E. Fanlo-Altuna in his home town (San Sebastián), completing his postgraduate studies with D. Strange and J. Ward-Clarke (baroque cello) in Royal Academy of Music of London and Berlin’s Hochschule der Kunste with W. Boettcher.

At present he is a Chair Professor of cello in the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid and gives regular master classes in the Royal Academy of Music of London. He has participated as a soloist in important openings, such as the United Nations’ Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room in Geneva in 2008, recital in the presence of the King and Queen of Spain, and the Chillida-Leku Museum, invited personally by the famous sculptor. He is a regular teacher of the Young Orchestra of Wagner Festival of Bayreuth.

Likewise, he has given the first audition (together with pianist Iván Martín) of Pau Casals’ unpublished work for cello and piano upon request of the very Pau Casals Foundation.

In 1994 he is selected to interpret E. Elgar’s concert under Y. Menuhin and Lynn Harrell’s batons, meaning his debut in the Royal Academy Orchestra of London that year. He has played as a soloist with the London New Sinfonia, Northern Chamber Orchestra, Saint Petersburg’s State Hermitage Chamber Orchestra, Ciudad Real’s Symphony Orchestra, Castilla y León’s Orchestra, Málaga’s Philharmonic Orchestra, North Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Virtuosi di Praga or Panamá’s National Orchestra interpreting concerts by Haydn, Dvorak, Boccherini, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven or Rodrigo with the batons of O. Vlcek, P. Halffter, Y. Sharovsky, H. Ávila, O. Lenard, J. Cantarell-Rocha, J. de Eusebio or Colin Metters.

He has given cello recitals –both as a soloist and with piano in Europe, Asia and America, working with composers such as M. Balboa, G. Ligeti, J.M. Sánchez-Verdú, G. Kúrtag or C. Halffter, and playing in international festivals like Salzburg, Prague, Peralada, León, Sorian Musical Autumn, Osaka or Edinburgh.
Besides, some of the most prestigious Spanish composers (to name but a few, E. Guimerá, M. del Barco, T. Aragüés, I. Bagueneta, A. Romero, R. Paús, G. Díaz Yerro, P. Halffter or C. Perón) have dedicated their pieces to him.

He has recorded for record label Autor composers J. Nin and J. Nin-Culmell’s integral for cello accompanied by with Seville’s Royal Symphony Orchestra and master A. Ros-Marbá.

Thanks to his activity in the baroque repertoire, he has shared the stage with Simon Standage, D. Schrader o L. Dreyfus. Together with A. Martínez Molina, he has made the first recording of D. Porretti’s recently discovered Sonata in D major (among other pieces by L. Boccherini) for the record label Arsis. Precisely for this label he has also recorded J. S. Bach’s Six Suites for cello only.

Iagoba Fanlo is the Artistic Director of the National Contest of Cello “Florián de Ocampo” and is Associate of the Royal Academy of Music of London. He plays a cello made by I. Guillamí in 1746. He has played as a cello soloist in the E.U.Y.O. (European Union Youth Orchestra), the Spanish State Media RTVE and Nagaokakyò’s Chamber Orchestra (Japan), working with directors such as CM. Giulini, M. Rostropovich, B. Haitink, K. Sanderling, G. Prêtre, R. Norrington and Colin Davi, and recording with labels Phillips Classics, E.M.I. and Virgin.
