Viola Chair at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid

He is born in 1961 and initiates his music studies at the age of seven in Vietnam, where he stays in the Special Centre of Music for twelve years. In 1981 he gets a scholarship of the Russian Government to continue with his studies in the State Conservatory Tchaikovsky of Moscow, enjoying the protection of great masters Fedor Druhzinin (for whom Dmitri Schostakovich composed his last sonata for viola and piano) and Yuri Bashmet. He graduates there as an orchestra soloist and viola teacher and is given the special qualification of "Master of Fine Arts" with the highest honors.
In 1987 he beings to give recitals in Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Vietnam and the former Soviet Union with excellent reviews. In 1989 he receives the Special Diploma of the International Viola Contest of Markneukirchen (Germany).
As for his recordings, it is worth mentioning his interpretations of the Concert in D major for viola with K. Stamitz’s orchestra, P. Hindemith’s Sonata for viola and piano, Op. 11, no. 4 and F. Schubert’s Sonata Arpeggione.
In the educational field he has played a very important pedagogic role in the former Soviet Union as Fedor Druzhinin’s assistant professor.
He also takes part as a regular teacher in several interpretation and advanced courses. He combines this activity with teaching in different Higher conservatories and playing in many recitals, where –in his endless effort for disseminating the viola he shows his perfect knowledge of a broad repertoire, including classic and contemporary periods.
He has published "The Young Viola", a teaching method for viola beginners.
Thuan Dominh is a Chair professor of viola in RCSMM and has recently recorded a viola version of Bach’s Cello Suites in a double CD for the record label Verso.
