One of Malaga’s most attractive locations and the regular venue of various cultural events, this former religious building in the Plaza de San Francisco became the permanent home to the Malaga Lyceum when the society was formed in the mid XIX century.
It was during this same period that the old San Francisco Convent first forged links with the world of music as the permanent home of the former Classical Concert Society led by the master musician Cappa, the forerunner of the present-day Malaga Philharmonic Society. This was followed shortly afterwards by the School of Music and Declamation, a seat of learning that was run by the society until 1971, when it was relocated to its present-day home on El Ejido university campus.
This XVI-XVII-century construction was originally part of the expansive San Francisco Convent, a building of immense artistic value whose magnificent exterior is crowned by the Mudejar-style convent tower. One of its main features is the old church, now converted into an assembly hall which regularly plays host to a variety of important events, usually of a musical nature.
Following work carried out by Unicaja’s socio-cultural trust, the Royal Maria Cristina Music School has been restored to its former splendour, its rooms now boasting a multitude of decorative features.
